Description

Saint Mary of the Oaks is a tiny chapel on top of a hill overlooking Indian Lake County Park built in 1857. The only way to the top of this peaceful scenic hilltop is a steep footpath. German immigrant John Endres built the chapel by hand after he made a promise to God he would build a church if his family would be spared a diphtheria epidemic. I hang a pinhole photo of the chapel in my booth at art fairs and several times people have come in my booth, see the photo, and tell me they are descendants of Endres. I guess his bargain worked! A segment of the Ice Age Trail in Dane County, Wisconsin. Digital photo by Cameron Gillie.

Cameron is a thousand-miler who photographed Wisconsin’s landscapes, communities, and people when backpacking the entire Ice Age Trail.
