Around Wisco Zines

My fist photography zine
The Canonet zine

My first “zine” —or “mini book” is in print!

As a photographer I think putting your work into a physical form is important. Of course, I’ve spent years now working on the Ice Age Trail book but I want to do smaller zines as well just for fun, some with film photography and some with digital.

Social media posts last only a few hours, but a physical book or a framed print will be around for years. It’s a shame to waste photography by only posting it on social media.

This is just the first of many zines ideas I hope to produce while working on larger projects. Zines can be a great outlet for smaller personal projects that I do more for the fun of it than a commercial venture.

The Canonet Zine

My first zine is a 28-page collection of random photos taken with one of my favorite film cameras on my travels around Wisconsin. This zine features color film images taken with the Canonet QL17 G-III, A 1970’s Japanese point and shoot film camera . The small size and ease of use make the Canonet a perfect film camera to “have along” when you are working on other projects. It’s my go to “fun” film camera that is easy to travel with while lugging around professional digital gear.

Small Towns and Big Spaces

A little about my next zine I want to print in the near future…

While I haven’t received my mail in Kittson County for over 30 years, in many ways, it’s still my home. Since I left to become a photographer in 1990, I’ve visited, but never spent much time. Photographing the Ristad Farm book over an entire growing season has given me time to go and wander, explore, and photograph the place I used to call home.

Nostalgia is what guided me on my quiet early morning drives across the open spaces of Kittson County with a vintage film camera. So these photographs aren’t necessarily an accurate representation of life in Kittson County. The county may be small but it is still dotted with small thriving communities full of warm, friendly people. These photographs are literally my drive down memory lane as I wandered to each small town in Kittson County over the course of the summer. Many of these places I hadn’t been to in over half my lifetime. I even discovered several hidden corners of the county I have never laid eyes on.
