A signed copy of “Small Towns – Big Spaces” – A 10×7 inch full color 60-page photography soft cover zine featuring film photography of Kittson County, Minnesota. All the photos were shot with a vintage film camera on Kodak Gold 200 film.
“While I haven’t received my mail in Kittson County for over 30 years, in many ways, it’s still my home. Since I left to become a photojournalist in 1990, I’ve visited, but never spent much time. Photographing the Ristad Farm over an entire growing season gave me time to wander, explore, and photograph the place I used to call home.
On my quiet early morning drives across the open spaces of Kittson County, nostalgia is what guided me. Therefore, these photographs aren’t necessarily an accurate representation of Kittson County. Today it is still dotted with small thriving communities full of warm and friendly people that make up this small corner of Minnesota I grew up in. Instead, these photographs are literally my drive down memory lane as I wandered to the small towns in Kittson County over the summer. Many places I hadn’t been to in over half my lifetime. I even discovered several hidden corners of the county I have never laid eyes on.
I chose a film camera to capture these images in this book. It’s impractical, but after being a digital photographer for over 20 years now, it’s a nice change of pace at times. Film photography is an entirely mechanical and chemical process that is a throwback to simpler ways. Much like my nostalgic drives over the summer around my childhood “neighborhood” of Kittson County.” –Cameron Gillie
