I recently biked out and back on the Military Ridge State Trail to Governor Dodge State Park. The Military Ridge Trail is a shorter 40-mile rails to trails bike route, but I took my time to stop and take in the scenery along the way. I don’t fit the stereotype of a “cyclist”. I don’t… Continue reading The Military Ridge State Trail
Author: Cameron Gillie
Cameron Gillie began his photography career as a staff photographer at several daily newspapers. As a photojournalist he documented all aspects of life, everything from the extraordinary to the ordinary, learning to appreciate both equally. Photojournalism is like having a front row seat observing life as it unfolds. He explored life in Colorado while working for the Greeley Tribune and in Florida while working for the Naples Daily News.
Leaving the newspaper business to begin a freelance photography career, he continued to follow his curiosity and explore new creative challenges. Cameron has been an exhibitor in art festivals and galleries around his new home in the Midwest, his art taking on many forms over the years.
His love of the outdoors inspires him to photograph wildlife and nature, while his fascination with the simplicity of homemade cameras brought him to pinhole photography. Cameron is an avid film photographer using analog vintage cameras. He develops and prints the images in a darkroom in his basement in Madison, Wisconsin.
This diverse background in photojournalism and creative photography prepared him for his biggest project ever — hiking the Ice Age Trail and documenting the landscapes, communities, and people of Wisconsin. Cameron enjoyed blending nature photography as well as capturing storytelling images of the interesting people he met along the way.
Ristad Farms book project
Documenting a season on a modern family farm In the 21st century very few people have a concept of where their food comes from and the hard work it takes to produce it. I’m excited to be photographing the Ristad family farm in Northern Minnesota during the entire 2022 growing season. Today the farm is… Continue reading Ristad Farms book project
The challenges of photographing the Ice Age Trail
I knew photographing the Ice Age Trail would be a unique challenge. From a purely photographic standpoint, the worst possible way to photograph the Ice Age Trail is to backpack the entire Ice Age Trail. But I knew hiking the whole trail would be the best way to experience the Ice Age Trail. So there… Continue reading The challenges of photographing the Ice Age Trail
What I learned Backpacking the Ice Age Trail
I’ve been reflecting a lot on what I learned backpacking the Ice Age Trail. Hiking an entire National Scenic Trail is bound to change you in some ways. You have a whole lot of time to think about things as you walk alone with only your thoughts for 1200 miles. I’m a photojournalist, and I… Continue reading What I learned Backpacking the Ice Age Trail
Ice Age Trail Gear List
Here’s my gear list of the camping and camera gear I bring when I’m backpacking the Ice Age Trail. I’ve been more of a canoe and kayak paddler most of my life, but after completing the entire Ice Age Trail I have learned a few things I can share. YouTube First, I’ll give credit to… Continue reading Ice Age Trail Gear List
Slow hiking the Ice Age Trail
Slow hiking is what I’d call my first 28 days and 250 miles on the Ice Age Trail. My pace has been determined by my photography. I don’t regret it at all. In fact, when I go back out after Labor Day to continue the hike, I plan on slowing it down a bit more.… Continue reading Slow hiking the Ice Age Trail
A portrait of Wisconsin
My goal of hiking the Ice Age Trail is to create a portrait of Wisconsin by photographing the people, culture, and landscapes of Wisconsin. For me, this trek across Wisconsin is equally as much about the people I meet as it is about the natural landscape. The Ice Age Trail is not like wilderness trails… Continue reading A portrait of Wisconsin
Hiking the Ice Age Trail
I have now completed over 900 miles of the 1200 miles of the Ice Age Trail over 90 days. This Spring I hope to finish my hike of the entire Ice Age Trail to photograph the natural landscape, culture, and history of rural Wisconsin! I had never done anything like this and seriously wondered if… Continue reading Hiking the Ice Age Trail
Getting ready for the Ice Age Trail
It seems like it’s been forever now that I’ve been getting ready for my Ice Age Trail trip. Now that I’m just days away from actually starting I feel like I’m completely unprepared. But I guess you are never completely ready, the time just comes and you need to start. It’s impossible to plan the… Continue reading Getting ready for the Ice Age Trail
